It’s all about vocabulary!

Try this. I call it « Dix Mots ».

Whatever your French level is there is something for you :

• Just try to understand the short text if you don’t feel very comfortable with the language.

• Go further with the ten words I wanted to enlight and learn more about French life.

• Think about the debate I suggest at the end of the short text and leave your comments.

Dans la rue de la Goutte d’Or à Paris il y a un petit café. Tous les matins les pépés et les ouvriers y boivent leur café. C’est une tradition vous le savez bien! En France, tôt le matin, les vieux et les ouvriers discutent au café. Ensuite les ouvriers vont travailler au chantier et les papis vont au marché.

Vous pensez que c’est un « cliché »?

• Se promener dans les rues de Paris est une expérience fantastique. Ce sont de vraies leçons d’histoire!

• La café c’est important : tout le monde s’y rencontre. On y boit ce que l’on veut (café, thé, coca, bière…). On peut parfois y manger.

• Les pépés et les mémés ce sont nos vieux! Mais il vaut mieux dire « personnes agées »… On utilise aussi papy, mamie, grand-père, grand-mère. Si dans la famille on parle de la mémé, c’est qu’elle est très vieille! Et qu’on l’aime beaucoup aussi.

• Le mot ouvrier désigne une catégorie sociale. Il travaille dans une usine ou sur un chantier. Normalement, en France, on travaille huit heures par jour.

• La France est un pays qui aime les traditions. Dans votre pays il y en a sans doutes aussi. Les aimez-vous?

• Les vieux : voir « pépés »

• Discuter : Au café on discute beaucoup. On parle de tout. A la maison on peut aussi discuter… une fois que l’on a éteint l’ordinateur, la télé, l’ipod, l’ipad et le téléphone portable du boulot! Moi j’aime discuter politique, mais je n’aime pas parler boutiques. Et vous?

• Chantier : à Hong Kong les ouvriers travaillent sur les chantiers d’immenses immeubles.

• Je vais au marché le week end. J’achète des poireaux et du fromage de chèvre. Ensuite je bois un café et je discute parfois avec un pépé qui me raconte sa vie d’ouvrier d’autrefois!

This is my first post!

Are you learning French at the moment? Do you like French language and culture? Do you want some more stuff to improve? Do you just like languages, all of them? If so you can read on, you may find some food.

My purpose is to teach French. But hold on, don’t expect me to kill you with things like : « employé avec l’auxiliaire être, le participe passé s’accorde en genre et en nombre… », or « les conjonctions de coordination … », I don’t think it’s very sexy to learn a language this way.

I decided to try something else. The blog’s aim is to make you reacting. I want it to be a place where everybody can help each other and where we can learn from each other too.

You know what? I’m a teacher and, after all, I like to learn. I want to federate other people who like to learn : you, my readers. Learn me something about your own language (Greek, Urdu, Korean, Japanese, Afrikaans…), make comparisons, open my eyes about your culture, and all the readers will benefit from it. That would mean that I reached my goal : teaching, learning, sharing.

By the way, sometimes I may refer to Dutch, German, Czech or … latin!

You will find some kind of exercises to train : read, understand (or not) and then react. And if you don’t understand that’s great because you will have to tell why… I will answer all your reactions.

You can also ask me for more difficult things if you really want to be challenged. I’ll make it!

To learn more you have to challenge yourself, but I have too! Teaching isn’t that easy. The world of teachers is changing. You must challenge your teachers too. Teaching isn’t a oneway path with a powerful mentor who knows and a poor lonesome student who is ignorant!

The possibilities to communicate are infinite. Learning a language is communicating.

I want to grow something new with this blog : a trendy exciting thoughtfull virtual classroom, not some more boring grammar lessons.
